Bermondsey Street
A brief for Bermondsey Square
In 2005 what if: projects were commissioned by Metal to develop a brief for the public realm for the proposed Bermondsey Square development. As a starting point the what if: projects spray-painted two outlines onto the existing site. Yellow lines described the layout of the proposed mix-use development, red lines indicated the extents of the 1339 ruins of Bermondsey Abbey that lay under the ground level.
what if: projects aimed to communicate the past and future of Bermondsey Square to local residents, antique market traders (who formerly used the space) and visitors to open a debate about the future use of the space.
